Science

This series of publications from the U.S. bishops' Committee on Science and Human Values designed to show how religion and science can offer complementary insights on complex topics like global population, genetic manipulation (bookmark), and human embryo research. The statements are directed to people of science and faith, indeed, to all those concerned with the moral implications of humanity's new knowledge and power.

The Promise and Peril of Genetic Screening
This statement reviews the increasingly normal medical practice of genetic screening. While useful as a tool to prevent and avoid human suffering (the promise), the peril is that genetic screening has the potential to "tempt people toward decisions the Church recognizes as objectively wrong." With this in mind, the U.S. bishops offer to those in the health care field and to those they serve a moral vision steeped in Catholic tradition that ensures respect and dignity of all life and promotion of the common good. Third in the series.

The Manner of Our Dying
This document addresses the moral issues raised regarding death and dying, recognizing that "respectful care of the dying strengthens the bonds between the one bedridden and the one at the bedside." The U.S. bishops explore the present situation of dying in this country and encourage open discussion on the topic. In its defense of life, the Church seeks to ensure that those who are dying receive material, emotional, and spiritual comfort. Fourth in the series.
