This revision of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) seeks to promote more conscious, active, and full participation of the faithful in the mystery of the Eucharist. For bishops, priests, and deacons; liturgists, musicians, and artists; and liturgy committee members, students, and the faithful, this edition of the GIRM is part of the third edition of the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) that was published in Latin in 2001. While the Missale Romanum contains the rite and prayers for Mass, the GIRM provides specific detail about each element of the Order of Mass as well as other information related to the Mass. Divided into nine chapters, the GIRM starts with an introduction giving the theological and spiritual context for the chapters that follow, focusing on the Eucharist’s central place in the life of faith. The remaining chapters explain the duties and functions of the ministers and people of God, reflect on and give insights into the specific elements of the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist and how each is to be ritually performed; and highlight the roles of song, posture, and movement. The latter chapters focus on the celebration of Mass with various numbers and types of presiders, arrangement and furnishing of churches, requirements for the celebration of Mass, Masses for specific circumstances, and adaptations. From the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
