A Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence Against Women
This 10th anniversary edition of the bishops' pastoral statement on domestic violence addresses a faith community that is becoming sensitive to this widespread but often hidden tragedy. Includes a new section of guidance addressed to church ministers as first responders to domestic violence and an updated discussion of how religion can be a resource or a roadblock for abused women. Strategies for victims, updated statistics, and new resources and web sites to which individuals can refer for assistance make this a useful publication for parishes, women's and social justice groups, church-sponsored charities, and health care facilities.

This video presentation shows us three communities where individuals are taking action to stop violence in their communities and in their lives. Visit New Orleans, where a multi-denominational organization called ACT (All Congregations Together) is determined to purge the neighborhood of drugs, guns, and delinquent landlords. Then travel to Los Angeles, where programs where called Hope in Youth and Jobs for the Future are working to keep young people from joining gangs by providing one-on-one counseling, positive role models, and educational support. In Appleton, Wis., join a group of women who have experienced domestic abuse in their own lives and are now working to help other victims of family violence. ACT and Hope in Youth receive grant support from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the Church's antipoverty program. Videotape from the U.S. bishops' Catholic Communication Campaign.
