U.S. Bishops Protest Expulsion of Priests from Haiti

Following is the text of a cable sent by Father Robert Lynch, Associate General Secretary of USCCB to Bishop Franηois Gayot, President of the Haitian Bishops' Conference, July 25, 1985.

"We express our prayerful support and sympathy with you and all the Church in Haiti at this difficult time. We must protest the unwarranted interference with your ministry of social communication and the related expulsion from the country of Fathers Triest, Hostens, and Pollefeyt of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Such harassment of the church's media touches the Church's fundamental right and duty to communicate with the faithful, including matters of social importance. We trust that these dedicated missionary priests will soon be allowed to return to their ministry and that all journalists, dedicated to truth, may enjoy essential freedom of expression."
