WASHINGTON--The opposition of the United States Catholic Conference to military assistance to the Nicaraguan contras has been reaffirmed by Msgr. Daniel F. Hoye, USCC General Secretary.
In a letter to each U.S. Senator and Representative, Monsignor Hoye stated that the USCC has "consistently opposed" military aid to "all parties" in the Nicaraguan conflict and he referred "specifically" to U.S. aid to the contras.
The USCC is the action agency of U.S. Catholic bishops.
Text of Monsignor Hoye's letter:
Once again the issue of military aid to the Nicaraguan contras is before the Congress. Permit me to re-state the U.S Catholic Conference position on the matter.
The USCC deplores the excessive interference by outside powers, including the United States and the Soviet Union, in the internal affairs of Nicaragua, and has consistently opposed military aid to all parties to the conflict. This specifically includes U.S. aid to the contras.
The continuation of such aid prolongs and deepens the conflict with its attendant costs in human suffering and economic devastation; it postpones the inevitable and essential political settlement; it frustrates the peace-making efforts of our hemispheric allies. We urge that such aid be terminated as soon as possible.
