Statement of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti on Recent Arrests

November 13, 1984

We have been alerted by numerous families justly alarmed by the wave of arrests which have been going on for more than a week in different regions of the country, with no application of Constitutional provisions.

In the name of love which links all members of the Body of Christ, and in our pastoral responsibility, we have decided to intervene before the responsible authorities to obtain respect for fundamental rights such as individual freedom, the physical and moral integrity of every citizen, and tranquility and peace in the household.

We invite the Christian people and all people of goodwill to keep in mind and to meditate on the solemn principles from which come such fundamental rights, to pray and work toward the making of a just and fraternal society.
