Statement on Expulsion of Foreign Priests

Statement by Bishop James W. Malone
President, NCCB/USCC
July 12, 1984

Conflicts within Nicaragua have one more drawn world attention to that country, most recently with the summary expulsion of then foreign priests. This action was taken by the Nicaraguan government in violation of the fundamental requirements of due process. I consider the expulsion of these priests to be both unjustified and detrimental to the cause of justice and peace.

The fundamental rights and dignity of the faithful and clergy, as of all the people of Nicaragua, must be zealously safeguarded. I echo the sentiments of Pope John Paul II in condemning this expulsion.

I join in solidarity with the bishops of Nicaragua in calling for an inclusive dialogue to reduce the internal and external tensions of that troubled country.
