July 15, 2005

Rt. Rev. Cornelius Kipng’eno Arap Korir,
Chairman, Kenya Episcopal Conference,
Waumini House,
P.O. Box 13475,
Nairobi
KENYA

Your Excellency,

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the murder of Bishop Luigi Locati, apostolic vicar of Isiolo in northern Kenya. I am distressed by the by the general violence and lawlessness plaguing northern Kenya and particularly shocked to hear of the brutal attacks on civilians in the districts of Moyale and Marsabit.

I wish to express my condolences to the people of Isiolo who have lost their bishop, and to all the people of Kenya as they mourn those killed in Moyale and Marsabit. I also express my admiration for, and solidarity with, my brother bishops in Kenya who heroically serve God’s people in places of great need and frequent danger.

May God bless the people of Kenya with peace and the souls of the departed with eternal rest.

Fraternally yours in Christ,

Most Reverend John H. Ricard, SSJ
Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee
Chairman, Committee on International Policy
