Dear Representative Pelosi,
I wish to thank you most sincerely for the strong efforts you made last month to increase funding for poor country debt relief in the foreign operations appropriations bill.
You performed an extraordinary act of solidarity with millions of people in many of the world's poorest countries who are suffering under the weight of excessive external debt.
I was, of course, keenly disappointed that your amendment did not succeed. I am heartened, however, by the news that you intend to press ahead and offer a similar amendment on the House floor. We will continue to encourage House members on both sides of the aisle to join you in support of full funding for debt relief.
With thanks again for all you are doing to make the Jubilee Year 2000 a time of hope for the poor and vulnerable in debt-ridden countries, I am
