Statement on First Anniversary of Archbishop Romero’s Assassination

Archbishop John R. Roach
March 24, 1981

Meeting on the first anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, we express first our deep gratitude for the witness offered in recent years by the Church in Latin America, symbolized most dramatically in the total witness given by the martyred Archbishop Romero. We express as well our deep concern for the continued suffering endured by so many poor and defenseless people in El Salvador where thousands have been killed since the Archbishop’s assassination. We express, finally, the prayerful hope, one voiced repeatedly by the Church in El Salvador, that vigorous steps toward a political solution will be taken by all parties responsible, assuring the full and free participation in the national life of all sectors committed to a more just and equitable society.
