Transmittal of Haitian Resolution to Senate

June 16, 1977

Dear Senator:

On May 2 of this year, the Ad Hoc Committee on Migration and Tourism of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted a resolution on Haitian refugees. This resolution was in response to the growing problems being experienced by significantly increased numbers of Haitian refugees in our society.

It should be noted that this resolution specifically urges that deportation proceedings against Haitian refugees be stopped. In addition, it calls for the release of Haitian refugees who are currently incarcerated because of violating immigration laws and granting amnesty and full refugee rights to all such Haitians presently in this country.

Because of the Bishops' concern for the plight of these people, we are sending you a copy of this resolution and asking that you take it under consideration in any effort which you might consider for congressional action addressed to the problems of Haitian refugees.

Sincerely,

James L. Robinson
Director
Office of Government Liaison
United States Catholic Conference
