Statement on War in Iraq

Bishop Carl F. Mengeling
March 20, 2003

As a Church, we are a people of faith, hope, love, justice and peace. We are above all a people of prayer. I have asked our priests and pastoral coordinators to open our churches for everyone, and offer from the rich treasures of our Catholic tradition daily opportunities for communal and private reflection and prayer.

We invite all people of good will to pray for

Our nation, our leaders, our armed forces at home and abroad and their families

The people of Iraq and all peoples affected by this conflict

A swift end to hostilities and commitment to reconciliation, healing and restoration

Forgiveness and justice and freedom from hatred and revenge

Restoration of national sovereignty and the dignity, rights, freedom and well-being of all. As the tragedy of war unfolds there will be other grave and sad reasons for prayer
