ROUNDTABLE
18 Bleeker Street, New York, NY 10012-2404 (No Web Site)
The ROUNDTABLE was founded in 1985 to serve those in diocesan offices that "link justice and faith, in light of traditional Catholic social teaching, through education which leads to action (advocacy, empowerment, and organizing) on issues, policies and structures affecting matters of justice and peace." The purpose of the organization is to provide "professional support and management development, coordination among the directors in their program planning and issue analysis, and greater access and influence in the formulation of church and public policies." The association serves and is an advocate for diocesan social action ministry.

Social action directors founded The ROUNDTABLE to develop ways of communicating, growing professionally together, supporting one another and speaking with one voice. The ROUNDTABLE accomplishes this mission through education, training and networking events; communications vehicles; "switch boarding;" advocacy and special projects

National Catholic Office for Persons With Disabilities
415 Michigan Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20017-1557

The National Catholic Office for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) is charged with fostering and promoting relevant pastoral statements issued by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. These document address the necessity of creating environments that accommodate the needs of the 14 to 15 million Catholics with disabilities and their families. The Bishops most recent publication, A Framework for Access and Inclusion: Welcome and Justice for Persons with Disabilities, is a reiteration of the major challenges included in their historic statement of 1978. It advises Catholics to look to NCPD for consultation and assistance, in fulfilling their obligations to create environments which do not limit participation of people with various disabilities and impairments at all stages of life. It affirms Church support of those civil rights covered by federal and state legislation.

Defense of the right to life implies the defense of all other rights that enable individuals with disabilities to achieve the fullest measure of personal development of which they are capable. These include the rights to equal opportunity in education, in employment, in housing and in health care, as well as the rights to free access to public accommodations, facilities and services. NCPD works through a national network of diocesan leaders called by their bishops to promote accessibility within the parishes, as well as with staff of NCCB/USCC and other Catholic organizations to assist them in creating awareness that disabilities are a part of every community.

NCPD celebrates the dignity and diversity of all human life and recognizes the wisdom of human vulnerability as a binding force in our parishes and communities. We affirm that every human life is worth living despite its fragilities and weaknesses. The Bishops noted:

"Each person is created in God's image, yet there are variations in individual abilities. Positive recognition of these differences discourages discrimination and enhances the unity of the Body of Christ."
